    The Alexander Doll Company

    the only major manufacturer of handcrafted dolls in America

Company founder, Beatrice Alexander Behrman was the recipient of many awards for her fine craftsmanship and creativity. Today, the company she founded carries on in her tradition. This famous company has been the subject of many books.
 
1895:
    Madame Alexander's father opens a doll hospital in New York City.
1920's:
  • Beatrice Alexander Behrman and her three sisters make handmade cloth dolls
  • The Alexander Doll company was officially begun with a $5000 loan in 1923 that enabled Madame Alexander to move her operations out of the family kitchen to a small shop nearby
1930's:
  • Madame Alexander begins creating composition dolls with painted features
  • Characters include:
    • 'Alice in Wonderland'
    • 'Little Women'
    • '3 Little Pigs'
    • 'Scarlett O'Hara'
    • 'Princess Elizabeth' face mold
    • 'Snow White'
1940's:
  • The Company transitions from compostion to plastic dolls

1950's:
  • A series of 'Mary Martin' dolls based on her Broadway performances
